First, 10kW and 10kWh are different
A solar array is normally described in kilowatts (kW), while battery storage is described in kilowatt-hours (kWh). A 10kWh battery does not need to be paired with a 10kW solar system. The appropriate combination depends on daytime generation, evening use, tariffs and backup goals.
What determines the installed battery price?
- Usable capacity: compare the energy available for everyday use, not only the nominal rating.
- Power output: this affects how many appliances can operate at once.
- Inverter compatibility: a retrofit may need a new hybrid inverter or AC-coupled equipment.
- Backup design: blackout operation may require a gateway, changeover equipment and a dedicated essential-load circuit.
- Site work: switchboard upgrades, cable routes, clearances and network requirements can materially change the quote.
- Warranty: compare years, warranted energy throughput, retained capacity and service support.
Because these variables are site-specific and product prices change, a single nationwide figure can be misleading. Obtain an itemised installed quote showing equipment, labour, electrical upgrades, incentive value and the final amount payable.
Current federal battery discount
The Cheaper Home Batteries Program supports eligible small-scale battery installations across Australia through the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme. The discount is generally applied upfront by the retailer or installer. Its value depends on the battery's usable capacity, installation date and current program factors.

State and territory assistance
Additional schemes are not uniform. For example, Western Australia has a residential battery rebate and eligible no-interest loans, while New South Wales currently promotes a VPP connection incentive and selected finance support. Older references to the SA Home Battery Scheme or NSW Empowering Homes loans should not be treated as current.
Check your state or territory government website on the day you request a quote. Ask the installer to identify each incentive separately and explain any VPP commitment or finance condition.
Choosing the right capacity
Start with interval meter data or recent bills. Size storage around repeatable solar surplus and evening demand rather than choosing the largest battery available. Oversizing can lengthen payback if the battery rarely completes a useful cycle.
