Can I add a battery to my existing solar system?

Yes, many NSW homes can add a battery while keeping their existing solar panels. Whether you can retain the inverter depends on its condition, exact model and the proposed AC- or DC-coupled design. Size storage from evening and overnight consumption, surplus solar, tariff, budget and backup requirements rather than panel capacity alone. Start with electricity bills and monitoring data, then have the equipment, phase supply, battery location and any selected backup circuits assessed.

Start with the existing system and household data

Record the panel capacity, inverter make and exact model, installation age and any faults. Review electricity bills, interval imports and exports, and solar monitoring across seasons. A battery upgrade for existing solar is most useful when there is energy available to store and demand at another time. If exports are low, first compare shifting appliances into daylight or assessing additional generation.

Do I need a new inverter for a solar battery?

Not always. A sound existing solar inverter may remain with an appropriate AC-coupled design. A battery-ready hybrid inverter may accept specified batteries, but that label does not mean every battery will work. Replacing an older inverter may be worth comparing if it is unsuitable or if a new hybrid design better meets your goals. AC coupled battery vs hybrid inverter

Two common ways to connect storage
DesignSimple explanationWhat to assess
AC couplingThe existing solar inverter makes AC electricity. A separate battery inverter converts electricity for charging and discharge.Potential to retain existing solar equipment; check metering, conversion losses and outage behaviour.
DC coupling with a hybrid inverterPanels and a compatible battery connect through a hybrid inverter on the DC side.May require inverter replacement and solar rewiring; confirm battery compatibility and panel limits.

Neither arrangement automatically provides backup. The full design determines what operates when the grid fails.

Cost of adding a battery to an existing solar system

Request an itemised installed quote rather than comparing battery-only prices. It should identify GST, equipment and labour, with optional work priced separately.

Ask whether long cable runs, trenching, wall protection, bollards, switchboard replacement, inverter removal and disposal are included or excluded. Do not assume these costs are covered by a package. Compare proposals on the same scope; no universal installed price or guaranteed payback applies.

Size the battery from your consumption

Compare evening and overnight grid purchases with solar surplus after daytime use. Assess usable kWh, continuous and peak kW, seasonal charging and backup reserve. Our guides for 6.6kW solar systems and 10kW solar systems include clearly labelled household examples. More storage can remain underused where demand or charging is limited.

Illustrative sizing check for a retrofit

This planning example assumes 8kWh of evening and overnight use, 12kWh of daily surplus solar before charging losses, daily solar charging, no grid charging and no backup reserve. It is not an installation example or a recommended product.

Illustrative capacity arithmetic, not product specifications
Assumed nominal capacityAssumed usable shareUsable capacityInterpretation
10kWh90%9kWhA starting comparison for 8kWh demand; check output, losses and winter charging.
15kWh90%13.5kWhMay be underused with the same demand and surplus; more capacity is not automatically better.

The 90% usable share is an arithmetic assumption, not a universal specification. Nominal capacity is total stored energy; usable capacity is the manufacturer-specified energy available within operating limits. Backup reserve and conversion losses reduce what reaches appliances. Check actual figures for the quoted equipment.

Use your bill and monitoring data to estimate demand

  1. Find imported kWh and the billing days. For example, 900kWh over 90 days is 10kWh of average daily grid imports; it does not show how much was used overnight.
  2. Download interval meter data from your retailer or distributor. Add the imports from sunset to the following morning for representative nights, including winter heating and summer cooling.
  3. Compare daytime exports for the same dates with solar monitoring. Exports show energy left after daytime use; check that the app measures exports rather than just generation.
  4. Record import rates, peak periods and feed-in rates. Compare the value of shifted energy with lost export income, losses and the installed cost.

If you only have bills, use them as a starting point and ask for interval data before final sizing. Moving flexible loads into daylight may reduce the storage you need.

Single-phase and three-phase considerations

The assessment should identify your phase supply and where large loads are connected. A battery on a three-phase property may back up only one phase or selected circuits, depending on the equipment. Ask which phases receive backup, how loads are distributed, and whether three-phase appliances are supported. Confirm connection and export conditions with the distributor rather than assuming the panel capacity sets them.

Battery backup for existing solar

Essential-circuit backup can prioritise refrigeration, lights and selected outlets. Whole-home backup needs suitable output and electrical design, and may still require avoiding simultaneous high-power loads. Ask for the supported circuit list, starting-load limits and whether the existing solar can generate during an outage. Backup runtime varies with demand and available stored energy. A grid-connected upgrade is not automatically an off-grid system.

Warranty, compatibility and installation location

Check the current Australian warranty for the exact battery and inverter, including retained capacity, throughput or cycle conditions, operating limits and who handles a claim. Distinguish manufacturer cover from installation workmanship. Confirm that changes to existing equipment follow its manufacturer requirements.

Ask the installer to assess clearances, access, wall construction, weather exposure and protection against impact. A convenient garage wall is not automatically compliant. Do not choose a final location before a qualified installer checks the site.

What we need to prepare your quote

Compare solar packages if adding panels too, and see our Sydney solar and battery services. Explore Esteem Energy’s battery storage assessment and the Tesla Powerwall equipment listing. Tesla’s Australian documentation describes integration with existing solar; your quote must still confirm the supported site configuration. Equipment availability and installation scheduling need confirmation.

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep my existing solar panels?

Often, subject to their condition and electrical compliance. The installer should check the complete system rather than replace panels automatically.

Can I install a battery without blackout backup?

Yes, a system can be designed for everyday energy use without backup capability. Confirm that distinction in the quote.

Will adding storage eliminate my electricity bill?

No such outcome can be assumed. Grid purchases may continue in low-solar periods, and supply charges remain while connected.

How soon can installation happen?

Confirm availability, connection approval and site preparation after assessment. There is no universal installation timeframe.

Battery rebates and incentives: check eligibility before buying

Checked on 2 October 2026. The Clean Energy Regulator explains federal support through small-scale technology certificates for eligible batteries connected to new or existing solar. Support depends on usable capacity and installation timing; ask for eligibility and the discount to be itemised in your quote.

The former NSW household battery installation discount is no longer available. A separate NSW VPP connection incentive may apply and can be combined with federal support where eligible. Compare provider access to your stored energy, backup reserve, tariff and exit conditions before joining.
